My wife and I live on Long Island but usually go into the city (Manhattan) to get the best Japanese to places like Blue Ribbon Sushi in Soho or Tomoe'. If we want the next best thing, we have found that Kotobuki in Roslyn is pretty close and very affordable despite trendiness of spot. Low and behold, we have found a Japanese place that is equivelant in quality and flavor to the finest NYC Japanese spots (short of Momofuku). It is called MUMON.
Mumon, is located in Garden City on Franklin Avenue. it is not easy to find since the parking lot is behind the strip mall which it is located in. We made a reservation for 2 last night (Saturday) and were greeted by a modern Japanese spacious, great room with a young Asian hostess. The decor is wide open with high ceilings and rich, dark colors and textures. The bar lounge as well as some of the booths in the back (left side) are soft and plush with lots of pillows, allowing us to immediately relax.
We were given a free sample from the chef of the Japanese chicken nuggets with asparagus and some sort of bechemel on the side right as we sat. It was delicious.
Crunch Roll (spicy yellow tail, panko crunchies, some other deliciousness)
Lobster Avocado Roll
King Crab Roll
House Ginger dressing Salad
Mocchi Ice Cream (ice cream with sticky rice exterior).
The Lobster Risotto was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the lobster tail was perfectly fresh and generous sized. The rolls were generously portioned and incredibly creative with lots of heat probably from Sriracha. Toro tasted like heaven and as if it were caught a few minutes before it was melting over the sides of my tongue.
Cons: For some reason the place was not crowded at all. We left at 8:30pm on a Saturday night and there were 4-5 tables taken out of about 30 possible. This might be since they are relatively new as they opened this spring. Or it may be the strange location a about mile outside of the town. The busboys would fill my water after each sip I took....literally which got a bit annoying. But I guess if they were more busy that would not have been the case.
We will 100% be returning ....soon!
I highly recommend Mumom even for the most discerning and difficult to please palates.
