i recently relocated to SD from chicago and admittedly was very disappointed with the food scene here (driving up to LA is not always an option) until...
thank you kirkK!!! your blog changed my life! ok, that might be a little over dramatic, but i love those hole-in-the-wall-non-tourist-trap places that offer good authentic ethnic food at reasonable prices. i still think chicago offers a much wider and diverse food scene, but my opinion on SD is slowly moving towards the positive side...
my first try was Da Kitchen. not the best plate lunches i have had but the best i had in SD by far (HI or otherwise). the moco loco hit all the right notes. my friend thinks the gravy could have used a little more salt, but i like my food with less salt, usually. we also tried the fish tempura which came with 3 pieces (as opposed to 5 as stated on the blog) but still it was more than we could handle. the fish was moist and the batter was just right: cruchy and non greasy, flavorful with a touch of japanese seasoning. the place was bright and clean and the people there couldn't have been nicer.
thanks. will continue to report my own experiences.
