We just got back from a trip to Cabo San Lucas, and we really missed the food there. We had lots of authentic taco stand tacos, carnitas, etc... so we were in the mood for more mexican food and I heard Mouse and the Bean on Hastings and Cambie (basement of Dominion building, across from that public park with the ultra clean public washrooms...Victory Square?) was good, so we went to try it. Bad mistake.
I had the Tacos Dorados with chorizo inside...I couldn't taste the filling AT ALL. My wife ordered some dish that started with "A", and it's basically small bits of cubed beef and green/red bell pepper and like a POUND of cheese all melted together into a gooey slab, which you cut apart and eat with tortillas. Neither of our dishes came with any condiments that you'd expect, like red or green salsa, fresh cut cilantro and onion, limes or any of that. What a bummer. Both dishes could've used more flavour. And the tortillas were barely warmed up...they broke and crumbled apart when we tried to put the filling in and eat them. Blaahhhhhhh.... We ordered a side of salsa and guacamole to try to add more flavour to our food, and 10 minutes later it came, sans salsa because they were out of salsa! Can you believe that? And the guac was the saltiest guac I've ever had in my life. With our 2 drinks (fresh squeezed oj which was sour, and "fresh" lemonade that tasted like it used those plastic lemons you see in the supermarket) the whole "cheap quick" meal came to more than $20! Yikes.
We were so fed up (yet still hungry) that we went down a couple blocks to Mexico Rico and had some decent tacos and a delicous rice drink called "horchata". I'd visit this place again to try their mole, but I'd never go to the Mouse and the Bean again...
