A few weeks ago we welcomed the newest member of the extended Wong clan with a red egg and ginger party at Moonstar. The quality of the huge buffet offering of more than 30 choices was good enough for me to throw away my prejudice against steam-table Chinese food. The trick was to follow around the staff who were replenishing the stations to get the freshest food.
The green-lipped mussels in black bean garlic sauce were outstanding when hot out of the wok. Unlimited oysters on the half-shell, curried crab, heaping platters of different kinds of noodles and fun, soups, dim sum, steamed clams, many preparations of veggie and meat stir-fries, trays of sashimi, salt & pepper prawns, stuffed eggplant, huge black mushrooms in oyster sauce, and more. There was so much to sample, I never made it over to the Cantonese barbecue station where the roast ducks, char siu, and other goodies were offered.
Is this great Chinese food? No, of course, not. But its better than most of the neighborhood joints around SF.
A BART station is right there and parking in the Travelodge lot is not expensive. One of the aunties mentioned that this is a favorite spot for a quick pre-theatre dinner whenever she goes to the Orpheum across the street.
