Monica Eng redeems the Tribune today

Okay, more of the special Dining section seems to be by one Lisa Skolnik than Ms. Eng, but the spirit of actually venturing into this city instead of eating at P.F. Chang's and saying you've had Chinese animates the special dining section in Sunday's Trib, which is devoted to telling you how to have an ethnic theme for your next party-- okay, that summons up visions of 70s housewives wrapping a scarf around their middles and serving curry-flavored pizza rolls, but at least it includes listings for markets of assorted nationalities compiled with the help of chow tour guide Evelyn Thompson. (Anyone been to International Club, 4000 W. 40th st.? Not to be confused with the one in the Drake, I'm sure.)

There's also the stunning revelation that Ms. Eng's determination to find the real stuff comes from the fact that her grandfather owned a chop suey palace on the future site of Daley Plaza, proudly serving Chinese-American to Americans rather than Chinese to Chinese....
