Hats off to Carl Chu for his splendid book about Chinese food in LA, I eagerly await Thi's report on his personal adventures.
As others have noted, the section on Teochew/Chiu Chow/Chaozhu cuisine is perhaps the weakest. Notably, there is little mention of Teochew goose, one of their most renowned delicacies - head to 888 Seafood Restaurant on Valley Blvd in Rosemead for this fine dish.
I tried another of the Teochew places from the book, Mien Nghia Noodle house at 304 Ord in Chinatown. Satay beef noodles are tasty, replete with crushed peanuts and available with both egg and rice noodles (fun-like). The flavour is richer with roasted chilli than the unctuous sweeter satay sauces I grew up with at family barbecues, but it is still a memorable bowl of noodles. Menu also includes Hainanese chicken rice but my nerve failed me here, I'll wait until Penang restoran in Chicago later this month.
