middle-class prices + outstanding food +/- pretentious attitudes = french or italian or other?

I'm looking for somewhere new to have a birthday dinner with the family. Although I'm dying to try Babbo, Daniel, Le Bernardin, or Esca, I'm trying to keep the price down to $26/entree max.

Do both French/Italian restaurants average the same prices for comparable quality? I just want a really mindblowing meal. My family's very bourgeois, so if we're going to get attitudes for not ordering wine/drinks, then the food better be spectacular.

Or should I try another type of food to get the costs down? I'm open to anything but Asian...the only requirement is that there be a variety of fresh seafood (parents' favorites and meat dishes (mine).

I really want to go to Babbo or Daniel though (*SIGH*)...maybe in a few years when I'm loaded. Are Lupa or maybe Bienvenue/Les Halles even close to great?
