Mezes

We're taking a short vacation from blazing hot Southern California in the Bay area and last night ate at Mezes in the Marina district. We had 6:00 reservations and were the first ones in the restaurant; they seated us at the table right next to the front window.

It was myself and my two kids (20 and 17). We decided to share dishes:

Spanakotiropita, filo stuffed with spinach, cheese and herbs, was very good. The filo was light with a good texture and was complimented nicely by the spinach and cheese mixture. My daughter didn't like it as she is just anti-spinach no matter how it is prepared.

Fried calamari came with a very garlicky paste/spread which lingered long after our meal. We all liked this one. The garlic spread was good but not as good as the garlic paste found at Zankou Chicken in So Cal.

Patatokeftedes, potato cakes with dill and spices, were tasty. The accompanying spread really made the dish, blending well with the crunchy outside and the concentrated potato filling.

Garides Soulaki, skewered shrimp in lemon and herbs, was very tasty. No question, this one was good.

Loukaniko Psito, sausage in a lemon sauce, was also tasty. It had a concentrated sausage flavor and the texture was nice. We all liked this one; it tasted much better than it looked.

Finally, the last meze was a special, shrimp with greek cheese in filo dough. This one had lots of cheese and was quite rich. I liked it more than the kids did.

We initially ordered 5 mezes but then added another order of calamari and the potato dish described above. Five was actually enough to be comfortable and after 7 dishes we were stuffed. I also ordered a glass of Greek viognier which was not bad. At least it didn't taste like resin.

Overall the food was very good but I thought the portions were a bit small for the price. I've read elsewhere on this board that the portions are generous but I didn't think so. I looked at what other tables ordered and theirs were no different than ours so it wasn't as if we were shorted on anything. The dishes tasted good and looked good, however. Service was decent. The waiter who filled our water and took our plates was more congenial than our regular waiter, but everything came in a timely basis and they were both attentive.

All in all a good meal, but to me it seemed that the dishes were a little bit small for the price.
