They've probably been there for a long time, but I discovered these sidewalk vendors with "toutaubeurre" on Sunday, 14th St. between 8th and 9th
We had a fantastic fried thingy that was a deep fried patty of corn meal that had little bits of pork? pork skin? within it that was pslit open and filled with radshies, onions, cilantro, some green sour sauce (tomatillo?), and a spicy red sauce.
What is the name of this? What were the little bits in the fried masa? Hopefully the woman will be there next week, she had a selection of other savory fried items that we'll have to try.
On a side note, we had a tourist couple come up to us and ask what we were eating, when we said we had no idea but that it was great, they promptly ordered one from the lady themselves! On the other hand, we were stopped by two UES girls clearly on their way to more trendy places in the Meatpacking who asked us what we had just put on our mango-on-a-stick (lemon, salt and chili sauce). They couldn't believe that anyone would eat a mango differently from themselves and even wrinkled their noses. Just goes to show that not all tourist are philistines about food and that not all New Yorkers are open-minded about it either.
