Had dinner at the Mermaid Inn with three friends last night, and although we weren't completely blown away by the food, we still had a nice time.
We started with a dozen Blue Point oysters, which were beautiful and perfectly fresh. We also shared the shrimp scampi appetizer, which had too much tomato for my taste (I tend to like scampi with loads of garlic and olive oil), but again, it was still very tasty.
Two of us had the cod, which was prepared nicely, with a good amount of celery root mash and some kind of reduced tomato broth. Another friend ordered the lobster sandwich, and although my first comment was, "It isn't served in a hotdog bun!" I thought the lobster salad itself was very good, with lots of big chunks of lobster... But it did make me wish for some pickles on the side, just like Barnacle Billy's in Maine! The only real loser of the evening was the spaghetti with shrimp and scallops, which was bland and quite dry. A bit of a letdown, since our server specifically recommended it.
None of us knew they didn't serve dessert, but we were all very happy with the little cups of chocolate pudding they brought out after our meal! A charming touch, and really a perfect way to cap off the evening.
