first meal at Arharn - Dessert!!!

Following Tom Meg's advice, my wife and I checked out Arharn Thai tonight. We did not order particularly adventurously - whole fried fish in chili sauce and pad thai. Both, especially the fish, were quite good, and the ambiance was genuinely soothing. But I must be honest, it was only the dessert that was a revelation. What is it with these Queens Thai places having the most amazing desserts in the city? I thought the debate was between Ubol's mango/coconut rice and Sripraphai's banana/sticky rice jobbies (I always like the former better), but Arharn's banana in coconut milk might actually be the best of the lot: it's AMAZING. It looks pretty unassuming - a bunch of bananas floating in a white soup. But the soup is not just coconut milk it's...well, I've no idea what's in it, but it has a slight lemony tang, a faint wisp of salt, and a warm creaminess that radiates pure love. The bananas seem slightly cooked, and their texture melts in your mouth as their flavor explodes. Just the best, best thing it was. A single order was enough for us to share - but it still took considerable restraint to avoid ordering seconds. Maybe it's the enthusiasm of a new find speaking, but for the moment my personal list of best Thai desserts in (Western) Queens (and I know you're all waiting with baited breath)reads like this:

1. Banana in coconut milk at Arharn
2. Mango and coconut rice at Ubol's
3. Banana Sticky Rice thingies at Sripraphai
