Today for lunch I went to check out May's in Newark(the reported sister restaurant of Joy in Foster City). When I got there I saw a change of ownership sign. The place was now called Peony Garden.
Decided to brave the place even though I had my heart set on having Taiwanese and the new establishment is not Taiwanese by any means. There are some specials written in Chinese on the walls and the door. I couldn't exactly understand the gist/style of the place as there were items from HK style pasta to northern lamb dishes to southern clay pots to dumplings. The waitresses spoke Mandarin to eachother but Cantonese to the kitchen staff.
I ordered a dried tofu with pork strips and a pork and chive dumpling (special on door). The dumplings looked homey. The wrapper was not too thick though lacked bite. The filling was awfully *hsing* (don't how to translate this other than sometimes this word can be synonymous with seafood being fishy or old). The first time they brought me the dumplings I had to send back as the filling wasn't even completely cooked yet. Even with further cooking, the hsing/old fish flavour of the filling was just horrid. The pork dish had nice wok breath but lacked a bit in seasoning.
It seemed to do fairly good business with an Asian work lunch crowd. I, personally, would not go again. Has anyone else gone to this place? Maybe I ordered badly.
