Day 1: caught an early ferry with the plan to hit bend in the road first thing. On the beach by 10:00 after grabbing an interesting egg roll from a stand at a craft fair in OB. Light crispy skin, very fresh veggies with flavorful pork inside. Unfortunately I lost the card with the name of the place. Lunch was sandwiches we brought ourselves. Dinner at the 6 kids request was Sharkys in Edgartown. Mediocre Tex-Mex but the kids love the atmosphere. I had the pulled pork Quesadilla that was just ok. Queso was nothing more than cheese wiz or Velveeta but the chips were hot and fresh. One person had the tortilla soup that looked great but was considered too salty. Husband declared the “classico” margarita quite good. The price for the 10 of us was around $190 and included 4 booze drinks and 2 wines.
Day 2: Had an excellent lunch at the Little House Café in Vineyard Haven after spending the morning at Polly Hill. The place had a slight Middle Eastern influence, a small but notable wine/beer list and used mostly foods from local farms. I had a wonderful Rose along with a juicy lamb burger. It was mixed with herbs (mint, maybe tarragon?) and then topped with a slice of grilled eggplant, a gorgeous tomato, red lettuce and tzatiki. My son had a plate of perfectly fried falafel. Small tender balls that were not greasy in the slightest but had a crispy exterior and a wonderfully smooth interior. It was served with a creamy lemon sauce that he could not get enough of and asked if he could lick the bowl clean, lol. The man had their version of a muffaletta. He raved and didn’t share a single bite. Along with he had some kind German wheat beer. The food, a beer, a glass of wine, 2 refilled ice teas and a coke came to $64. Not cheap but not expensive for the Vineyard. At some point would love to go back for dinner. This place is a keeper.
After a late afternoon swim/surf session at South Beach we hit Morning Glory for corn and also picked up some good looking tomatoes and a blueberry pie. Dinner was our own cow burgers on crusty rolls with the tomatoes on top and the corn on the side. Corn was perfect and not too sweet and these were some of the best tomatoes I have had all summer. The pie was quite good, if a little sweet, but <<head slap>> we forgot ice cream!
Day 3: Woke up to gray skies and pouring rain so only a Dock Street breakfast would do. Left the man home sleeping. 2 eggs over easy with linguica and home fries for me, donuts and sausage for the boy. Washed down with coffee and chocolate milk respectively and then we grabbed a portagee McMuffin to go for the man of the house. All in all breakfast came to $22.
Lunch was our making. Dinner was a few of our T-bones, more corn and tomatoes from Morning Glory and some creamy, smoky, delicious blue fish pate from Edgartown Seafood. If we didn’t have the steak already we would have picked up some of their day boat/harpooned swordfish that was thick cut and gorgeous.
Day 4: Leftover T-bone, tomatoes with eggs to kick off the day. Then we walked up to Murdicks Café (Formally Old Stone Bakery) hoping for apple fritters but they were all out. The boy got a Boston Crème and a double chocolate donut and said they were the “best ever”. Two lovely women working there who could not have been nicer. VERY strong iced coffee.
Exhausted after a wave filled day at the beach we stopped by Lure at the Winnetu for sustenance. The man and I had some of the best mojitos we have had in a long time, preferring to make our own. The boy had clam chowder topped with bacon. Not too creamy, tons of chopped clams and just the right amount of potato. He was in heaven. Menu for dinner looked great but very $$$. Too rich for our blood considering we were in flip flops and wet bathing suits covered with sand, LOL.
We normally avoid chains on vaca but having been to the Flatbread Pizza Co in North Conway and loving it we opted for take out for dinner. Sausage pizza and Jay’s Heart pizza was just what we needed. Fresh toppings, crispy crust and really good cheese. This place is easy to get to, plenty of parking and lots of options to please any appetite it is a really good addition to the family friendly dinner scene. About $40 bucks for two large pizzas but considering it will serve for lunch tomorrow that’s not too bad.
Day 5: Another gray and drizzly day. A quick stop at the Katama General store for breakfast on the way to beach (hey, we are optimists!). This place has a license to print money, especially if you decide to pick up lunch but it is home to very good scones. We had ginger and they were tender, flaky and had lots of ginger pieces. The ice coffee was passable but not worth $3.50.
Cloudy weather drove us inside for lunch at the Seafood Shanty. Not my favorite place but being one of ten my vote was over-ruled. For $18.99 I had a decent but not great lobster roll with a mixed green salad. The lobster was ice cold (ugh), mayo was at minimum (a plus) but had the hated celery. My gut says the lobster was previously frozen or least cooked much, much earlier in the day. The fish sandwiches and chicken wings were a hit with the kids; the sushi was considered one step above grocery store. Chowder was loved by those who had it but looked way too thick/creamy for my taste. If you want a view, eating upstairs on the deck can’t be beat but better food can be found elsewhere.
Too full for dinner so we nibbled on leftover pizza.
Day 6: Our last day! Breakfast was “clean out the fridge” so bits of this and that.
Grabbed lunch at another place we had never been to before-Lucky Hanks. It wa an excuse for one more lobster roll and this place delivered. Fresh lobster, lots of knuckle and tail meat with a big claw on top, the smallest amount of herb mayo on a grilled hot dog bun. Fresh, buttery and delicious. The man had the BLT and even with my lobster roll I had food envy. Thick cut bacon, local roasted tomatoes, herb mayo on bread that held together thru every bite. One of the best sandwiches of the trip. The boy wasn’t hungry and chose to eat leftovers. Just as well, more for us! Cost was just over $30.
Our last stop was Coop de Ville for extra crispy, extra spicy wings and a couple of beers (coke for he young one). Polished off a 20 pc order with another 20 to go and a 10 of med for the boy. The place was packed, the beer was cold and the wings were perfect. The extra wings will be used for buffalo chicken wraps at tomorrows picnic.
Never got our swordfish so will have to hit someplace local for that.
