I've never quite understood the neighborhood raves over this restaurant. I live close by, and go there a couple times a year out of convenience, and perhaps, awaiting a miracle coming out of the kitchen.
It's a nicely appointed place, clean, white tablecloth, pleasant staff......however.....
Decided on take-out last night- OK, it's Monday, not the best day to sample a restaurant, but the day of the week rule does not normally apply to Chinese Restaurants...
Started out w steamed dumplings (pork)- as always, delicious...Things went downhill with the hot and sour soup- a bland broth lacking character- some tofu bits floating around, but hardly a shred of pork or woodear could be found....Things got worse with the General Tso's Chicken- It was like soup (something I've experienced before with their to-go orders). The pieces of breaded chicken were floating in about an inch and a half of liquid...Also floating about were those World Renowned Chinese Vegetables- Carrots, Zucchini, and Green Pepper (translates to CHEAPER)
Could you at least throw in some Bok Choy, peapods, water chestnuts, something to add authenticity!!!
It was totally lame... I won't be back for some time
I'm still a big fan of Peking at 3167 N. Halsted- It's a take-out joint, but the food, in my opinion, is so much better, and a lot cheaper than Mars
