So I'm used to seeing "market price" on menus for fish, lobster, etc--but at la villa the other night, this was also on the menu next to sausage and brocolli rabe?! Does this strike anyone else as unusual? How much does the price of sausage, or brocolli rabe vary during the year? I've never seen this anywhere else. Even if there is a slight variation, just average out the price over a year, right?
Maybe it was to soften the blow of the sticker shock, because when we asked the price, guess how much? Seventeen dollars!! Granted, it is a good size serving, but that seems a bit excessive, considering I would pay the same or less for soft shell crabs, fish, etc at most other neighborhood places. The profit margin on this must be huge!
Maybe it's just me, but I recoil at making a simple peasant dish like this an overly expensive menu item, and I don't think I'll be going back to la villa anytime soon, with all the other choices on 5th avenue. What do all of you think?
