New Mandoo Bar is a Neighborhood Gift

I ate at the recently-opened Mandoo Bar on University Place between 11th and 12th, and it was absolutely terrific. The pan-fried pork and vegetable dumplings were incredibly fresh and thin-skinned with a delicate, slightly vinegary dipping sauce. The beef and vegetable hot stone (really bibimbap with beef) was superb: the rice became very crisp on the bottom of the bowl, and when the waiter stirred up the whole mixture with the sweet/spicy sauce, it became something far greater than the sum of its parts. The only less-than-stellar but perfectly acceptable dish was the dduk bokki, which I should have known I might not like as it had fish cake in it as well as the rice cakes I normally love. The space is warm yet austere, the prices were completely reasonable, and the waitstaff were incredibly attentive and seemed genuinely pleased when we said we loved the food.
