Checked out the relatively new Mahogany Room on Cross Bay in Howard Beach last night. It replaced the old Palmers Steakhouse. Just as we walk in a brawl was ensuing next door @ Prima Pasta but the cops came in time to break it up just after a table was flipped.
Well, come with a full wallet cuz the steaks start at $30 (unless you want the chopped variety). The glass of cabernet I had tasted like a bad Merlot. I ordered the tilapia with a dill sauce which actually was decent but a little bland if not for the dill sauce & squirt of lemon juice, which also helped. Interesting combo over the broiled fish. You get 1 piece of steamd broccoli so you have to order sides a la carte. I picked a $3 baked potato since there was no rice...go figure.
My lady friend wasn't that hungry so she had the penne w/ meat sauce, which fort $12.95 is the steal of the place. The portion was more than generous and should last for at least 2 more warmed-up dinners.
I just wasn't in the steak mood last night but that seems to be the rasison d'etre for this place and you can see that from the Newsday review linked below. Decent service, but the waitstaff and hostess were still learning (or not) the menu options and had to look at the menu to see what comes with each meal. Our waiter tried to proffer a Chilean Seabass but at $33 I balked and the broiled tilapia was fine.
The 3 different styles of warm bread and breadsticks was a nice touch to start the meal off with...would I go back? If I was in the mood for some beef and wanted to $pend I $uppo$e I would...
