Lu YU Tea House:
137-03 Northern Blvd just off of Main street 718 353 5632, Closed on Tuesdays. Go to the basement. Opened til 7 PM.
Recently on a rainy, cool evening 5 of us went over there to have some good Taiwanese tea. It's more like a tea tasting than an order of something from the menu. Here you sit down, Ann, the woman in charge, makes the tea for you (Kung fu style). The tea can be so good that you don't feel the bad side of effects of caffein. There is a whole procedure to be followed..Anyhow, LU Yu was around several years ago, then it closed for unspecified reason. I only saw their new ads in the paper few weeks ago. It turns out that they'd been back in operation for 2 years! Nice and intimate alternative to Tian Ren. Only for those who want to experience the ultimate tea as its own pure self.
They don't charge for making tea for you, but it's most likely that you would want to buy some of the tea that you've sampled. It is worth it to be able to sample the tea at its best: meaning purple clay tea pot, filtered water, warmed porcelain or clay tea cups, sniffers, well-timed steeping rounds...etc, versus styro foam luke warm "sample"!
