lovely lunch at AZ

Went to AZ for lunch today - it's on W. 17th between 5th - 6th. Prix fixe is $20.02 all year round. Appetizer, Entree, and Dessert included. First of all, the space is lovely - it's on the top of the building, so the sun is streaming in through the skylights, it's airy and open and very pleasant. The service was fantastic.

The food: One the table were wonderfully spiced breads, sort of pita/naan-ish, served with a cauliflower chutney which was almost bhaji-like. Yum. My appetizer was figs marinated in balsamic vinegar, with baby spinach and farmers cheese, in a lovely mild dressing. Entree was prawns with soba noodles and bits of sausage, with tiny bits of vegetables floating around - delicious and just spicy enough. Dessert for me was a plate of little cookies which were terrific. Presentation all around was very nice, too, and the hostess brought us some sorbets (mango, coconut especially) which knocked my socks off - just because she felt like it. Some nice teas, too.

All in all, an extremely enjoyable way to spend 90 minutes.
