No new news here, really. Wife and I enjoyed dinner at Palena (the main dining room) recently. We opted for the four course prix-fixe, which was almost too much food us, since so much there is so rich.
Everything was delicious. Here are just some highlights:
tomato bread soup with poached quail egg - this is one of the most delicious soups I've ever had: concentrated flavors on slippery textures of onion, tomato, and egg.
salad w/ beans, nuts, anchovies, and truffles - I can't believe how generous they were with the truffles. So many truffles!
gnocchi w/ pesto and light tomato sauce - of course you must never go to Palena without getting the gnocchi, and this version--while not the best of I've had here--was very good.
suckling pig w/ housemade bacon - the bacon is the supporting cast member of this dish that steals the show: cubes that melt in your mouth.
cashew dacquoise w/ chocolate sorbet - the dacquoise was good, yet very sweet. It was perfectly partnered with a scoop of what seemed to be pure cocoa sorbet.
The cookies were wonderful, of course.
We had brought our own bottle of wine, which the restaurant handled very well (i.e., without disappointment that we weren't ordering off the list--though we did start with a glass of Champagne) and decanted properly.
All in all a lovely, delicious evening.
