I discovered Panchita's #2 (16th. W. of Valencia)a couple of months ago on my regular food shopping walks with backpack (the fruits, veg.& fish are all super cheap and good around there - tomatoes #5/$1, oranges the same).
But I digress. El Zocalo brags on their menu that they have the best pupusas in town, or the world, or somewhere. But Panchita's #2 is the real deal. For $3 you get the fattest, juiciest carnitas con queso pupusas, which come with a bowl of that delicious cabbage salad and smoky salsa and of course chips. $3!
I challege anyone to beat that lunch deal.
Today I decided to live dangerously and try something else. I must tell you I was not disappointed. For $6 I got a lovely chili relleno with a souffle-like coating, a big, tender salvedoreno tamale that contained potatoes, olives and capers, buttery rice and the best refritos I have ever put in my mouth. These beans were so flavorful I don't even begin to know how to explain it.
Next week, when I get back from Monterey, I swear I am going to order the calf's liver!
Did I mention Panchita's is operated by a bunch of older women who are very sweet, and that it's a nice airy place to sit? I did actually get panhandled twice IN the restaurant, but that goes with the territory in this neighborhood, and could just be a consequence of the staff being so nice.
