With room for one more bite before ending our tour of King City, we stepped next door to Lorena’s Taqueria after finishing up at El Lugarcito.
Last year I’d noticed the change to Lorena’s, offering homestyle Mexican food (comida casera), a 180-degree switch from the DF-style hipster snacks of the previous tenant. With counter service and only four small tables, one or the other was likely the spot where “toodie jane” had the tough lengua incident.
But the promise of fresh masa specialties (e.g., gorditas, sopes, huaraches) and handmade corn and flour tortillas could not be ignored. We shared a gordita, $4.50, choosing carne asada as the meat on the recommendation of the cashier.
Made-to-order from fresh masa, the gordita shell was golden and crisp on the outside yielding to a tender center, just the way I like it. Filled with creamy refritos, shredded lettuce, cilantro, soft grilled onions, chopped asada, and queso fresco, the gordita became even more irresistible once drizzled with the medium-spicy guajillo chile-based salsa. We were already full, but this was too good to put down.
On the way out, I found out that the lady cook was from Guanajuato. Next time I’ll have to try her pambazo choripapas or the enchiladas.
