Long (long) LA wrap up

Reporting back after my 5 nite visit to LA from Boston, first time in 4 years. After we left the airport, stopped at Pann's for their $6 special of fried chicken w/ a side and a burger plate. Breast and wing were quite decent, slaw had pineapple which I could do without but not bad. Good griddled burger and okay fries, super nice people working and of course, a cool space which I didn't know had been in Pulp Fiction til just a few days before I left. Huge menu that we didn't make a dent in. That evening started with drinks at the Edison downtown, what an amazing space and interesting cocktail menu. Then our Dine LA meal at Bar & Kitchen which no one here had thoughts on but it was pretty great, esp. for the $26 price. Nice atmosphere and good service. I started with yummy crispy sweetbreads and the striped bass was good. G had salad w/ smoked salmon and lamb shanks which he loved. Dessert was an excellent apple bread pudding that wasn't heavy at all and the pot de crème was good too. Ended the nite at the Redwood.

Thurs. started with the wonderful Bee's Donuts which I discovered last trip (Olympic and La Brea). My maple frosted buttermilk donut was there and everything is really good. After looking at the buildings downtown we went to Clifton's which wasn't quite what I expected. That weird, woody decor was nuts and I didn't know it was a full on cafeteria (the upstairs was closed but I snuck up). We split turkey steak (like a chicken fried chicken) and unsalty scalloped potatoes. Whatever. Around Silverlake we split a fish taco at Tacos Delta which was fine. We tried to hit happy hour at Kung Pao Kitty on Hollywood (I loved the name) but that's closed now so onto Stout whose happy hour is 1/2 price for everything. Wow, what an excellent greasy burger (maybe a bit too greasy). We got the Stout Burger w/ blue cheese, bacon and caramelized onions, good for $10 and great for $5. Good beer choices for those so inclined. One more evening stop to Katsayu for their 7 for $7. Squeezed into the bar for the lobster dynamite roll and honey shrimp. The drinks were beautiful but the watermelon mojito had next to no mint. Cool P. Starck space, I wasn't feeling cool enough tho. Later was Big Neck Lodge in Los Feliz but the music wasn't as good this time so off to Ye Rustic Inn on Hillhurst where the smell of cleaning supplies killed it for me at. Would be hard to eat their supposedly great wings in there with that smell.

Fri. I ended up at the bar of Cole's shortly after it opened for lunch. Nice space and a very cool bartender who knew all the bands I liked. Got the half a large French dip w/ a side for about $9.50, with cheese on it but I didn't realize it would be unmelted. Bacon potato salad was excellent but I didn't like the sandwich as much as Philippes. After more soaking in downtown (such great buildings), met friends in Hollywood to see Frank Lloyd Wright's house then happy hour at Kitchen 24. All apps are ½ price and discounted drinks, we had a very good mac n cheese and wings but I hated it there. My drink had too much lime (the other two drinks were better), the music at 6PM was blasting crappy techno like you were at a club and the bartender was lame lame lame. I wrote that on the slip too. Other people are there besides your little friends dude. After stops at Bar 107 and La Cita downtown then Little Bar on La Brea (I think), we had late nite tacos at Tacos el Pastor on Santa Monica by Vermont where I went with G's rec of lengua Can't beat it for $1.65 each.

Sat. met a friend at Chang Dam Korean BBQ on Western where I got the lunch special of Daejibul Gogi-Sambap (marinated spicy pork with onions and scallions served with soup and vegetables) for $10.99 and R had tofu soup w/ seafood. English isn't so good there but nice ladies working and free parking! Wandered around Sunset where I tried K&C's maple donut but not as good as Bee's. After regrouping, we headed down to Long Beach for a show and ate first at Long Beach Fish Grill. I had really good grilled trout w/ garlic butter, eh fries and good slaw (about $11). DCs enjoyed their fish tacos and grilled mahi mahi. Good cheap food and a nice guy at the counter.

Sun. we hit a record show at Space 15Twenty then that Umami Burger. I had the "manly" burger w/ bacon, crisp onion strings and cheese (don't see this on the online menu). The guys got specials of a burger with pastrami (huge) and turkey burger w/ chili (messy) for like $12 and $14 which is awfully pricy when you have to order sides. The sweet potato fries were okay but the awesome side of tater tots was amazing. J had to get another one, try those if they're on the menu. I thought it was a good burger but preferred Stout. So many burger places in LA, it's not fair. Quick walk down West 3rd to find a good sandwich for the plane ride home and stopped at Simple Things for their "Philly pork" sandwich. Roast pork, rabe and manchego cheese for about $9. Good but not as good as Cutty's in Boston (or in Philly). Since we had the burger so late, I wasn't super hungry for dinner at Taix, the old school French place in Echo Park. We had a French waiter who was actually really fun. I just had the onion soup which I never order, very good and a nice large glass of Viognier for only $6 I think. They have a daily soup w/ salad special so M got the split pea and greens. Just $9.95 and you can get more soup. Couldn't eat dessert but that was a cool place (love the ornate dining room and booths) and I'd be curious to eat there for real. Met J at El Prado where they have interesting beers and ended up across the street at the Echo.

One last donut run very early in the morning to Bee's then Randy's on the way to the airport. Do all the good donut and burger places make up for having to drive EVERYWHERE? I don't think so but looking forward to the next trip. Thanks to those who helped with suggestions.
