Lavagna... eh.

I was really excited to try Lavagna last night after so many raves on this board, and now I'm wondering if I hit it on an off night or just ordered wrong because our meal was so underwhelming. I admit, had the food been better, this would have been a fantastic deal -- the room is adorable, the prices are so good, the wine was great. But the food was incredibly bland.

We had the calamari appetizer which was terrible -- thin, barely there pieces of calamari drowned in a meat sauce. You could barely make out the calamari and it looked like a bowl of spaghetti-o's. Maybe this was the point, but it was kind of gross. The other app we split, the prosciutto, was good -- a nice mix of sweet dates and fresh herbs (incidentally, the menu said it came with blood orange, which we never saw -- we didn't realize this until later, and didn't bother asking about it). For mains, I had the lobster ravioli in a tomato broth, which was utterly tasteless. It needed something -- ANYTHING -- because the pasta was nice and light, but the filling didn't even taste like lobster and the broth tasted like thin, watery tomatos. There was just no flavor. My husband had the stake, which was nicely prepared, but again, sort of flavorless.

All in all, 2 apps, 2 mains, and 2 glasses of wine came to $78 before tip. Certainly a nice price for that amount of food. But from all the good reviews, I expected more from the food at Lavagna. Did we order wrong? What do people like there?
