Would you please be so kind as to help me locate information on a former New York restaurateur ? His name was Giovanni and he had a restaurant at 44 East 55th in Manhattan for many years. I never knew his last name. Many of my family ate there often, and some attended his funeral in St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Giovanni emigrated to the USA from Italy (I believe) sometime after World War I. I do not know where he was from, though I strongly suspect Emilia-Romagna, from the character of his table.
He also had a very good friend (whose name I do not recall either) who came over with him. This friend ended up having a restaurant on Vallejo Street (between Columbus and Stockton) in San Francisco's North Beach. It closed in the late 70's.
I would appreciate any information you might be able to tell me about either gentleman. Their passion for good food seems to have become part of my blood. It would be wonderful to know more.
If you do not know of Giovanni, but know of someone who might, please pass this letter along.
Thank you very much,
