I went to Lam Hoa Thuan last night w/ a friend thanks to Nancy Berry's recommendation.
The menu was big, and there were several other specials on the walls in Vietnamese and Chinese (but not English).....so it was hard to decide what to order. We ended up ordering some pretty basic stuff, but it was good comfort food. I'd like to return and try more soon.
One thing that struck me was the number of choices I had when it came to ordering.
I first ordered shrimp chow fun. I was asked to choose a vegetable (they had bok choi, chinese broccoli, etc) and also choose wet or dry. I chose chinese broccoli and dry.
Next I ordered a wonton soup with BBQ pork (which ended up coming on the side). Did I want noodles? Yes. Egg noodles or rice noodles? Egg noodles. Thick or thin? Thick.
The shrimp chow fun was pretty good, but a bit bland, and I added a bit of hoisin sauce which helped. The vegetables and shrimps were very good though. Soup broth was okay, had nice bits of fried garlic and cilantro, and the wontons were also just okay. The BBQ pork was also just pretty good.
Total bill was a whopping $12.73 for plenty of food for two hungry guys.
The restaurant closed at 9 (they were shutting lights off by the time we were leaving around that hour). Overall, solid
Knowing this was prime bubble tea territory, we headed west on Irving and tried Wonderful Foods. I had the green milk tea with tapioca, friend had mango smoothie w/ tapioca. I am pleased to say this is the best bubble tea I've had so far in San Francisco....tea wasn't overly strong or weak, and the tapioca was perfect - good chew, but not hard inside. I'll definitely be back. They also have a very nice selection of candies and dried/preserved fruits.
Thanks again to Nancy for always recommending great places for me to try....I owe half of my meals to you!
