Lala's - PK's Review

PoetKitty | Dec 7, 2005 03:27 PM

After a 2 hour Thai massage this past weekend, my pals and I were *hungry*. Red meat votes abounded. Someone suggested skirt steak at Lala's, and since I had only been there once yearssssss ago, I was all-in. Translation - open-minded Chowhound in the house.

Place: Lala's Argentine Grill, Sunday, 12/4 - 7:30 PM
Myself + 2 guests

Ratings in brief:

Ambiance - C
Rather boring - it was dark, so that may be a factor, but we sat inside because I wanted a little eye candy, and this was minimal. Warm, a bit on the noisy side, and very blah.
Service - B-
Server was relatively prompt and cordial. Good enough.
Food (Taste) - C-
If it wasn't for the garlic, there was nothing here.
Food (Presentation) - C-
My dish actually looked un-appetizing - that rarely happens. And the sangria had a very funky color.
Wine/Drinks - D+
They featured the dreaded Jinro cocktails, so I opted for Sangria. Not. Good.
Value - C+
Prices are pretty solid here - nothing over the top.
Overall Experience - C
I won't be returning, but I'm not suffering nightmares.

In brief, we just wanted meat, but without pretention, reservations, and uber-high prices. The restaurant was only about half full, so we sat down immediately and scanned the menus - lots of steak choices, with various toppings (like cheese, garlic, herbs, etc.)

BREAD
Slightly stale rather tastless french bread slices awaited - the olive oil dipping sauce was thankfully stuffed to the hilt with garlic, so we snacked merrily.

DRINKS
I had sangria, friends had sodas. My sangria was *this close* to awful - no fruity goodness, no refreshing twang - very little flavor at all.

ENTREES
I had:
Entrana di ajo -
Skirt Steak with Garlic and Parsley + side salad
The salad was also rather bland, and the steak, while requested medium rare, was well-cooked. Still, this was relatively tasty. If you slather that much garlic on a worm-infested rotting trash-pile, I might eat that too. Just FYI.
Friends had:
Entrana Milanese
Fried pieces of skirt steak topped with mozzerella and salsa and served with mashed potatoes. I had a bite - this was decadent and very tasty, but one nibble = a day's worth of calories - heart attack, anyone? Yowsa.
Skirt Steak Salad
Just as it sounds - with nothing other than lettuce, tomatoes, onion, and the steak. Friend was happy, however, but it tasted blah to moi.

Lala's is, in a word, boring. I don't feel the need to return.

Ciao', Hounds!
