I just back from LA and want to thank everyone for their recs! I didn't get a chance to eat at every restaurant I wanted to but did well nonetheless. We ate on the cheap and tended to get take-out meals to eat in the hotel room as we were traveling with a toddler and we live in Brooklyn so he is really not used to all the driving - after a day of driving around we thought more sitting in a restaurant would be too much for him.
Here are some of the highlights (we were in LA for 3 days):
Bobs donuts at the Farmer's Market. These were great, we went twice. Thanks for the rec - I didn't realize that LA was a doughnut town.
Pinks - WOW these are great. We had the spicy sausage with chili and a hotdog with chili. I never thought I would like anything other than mustard on my dog. Pink's proved me wrong. Again, we went here twice because it was so good! The real blasphemy is that this was my 2.5 year olds first hot dog.
Izakaya Haru Ulal - This was the big restaurant meal we had and it was good. I think we didn't order right and ordered too many larger sized items such as the grilled mackerel, black pork katsu (which was great) and braised short ribs with radish. The grilled eggplant was a miss but the grilled shitake mushrooms and fried enoki mushrooms were great. Also the fried camambert was amazing. I would love to come back and order a better variety of dishes.
Zankou Chicken - We got a great bottle of wine (at a wine store) and then ordered the Shwarma and half chicken with extra garlic sauce. AMAZING garlic sauce - I would love to get the recipe for this (anyone have it?). The chicken was perfectly done but the shwarma was dry.
I had wanted to try a Persian restaurant but we didn't make it out to Glendale - you guys do a lot of driving!
I had also wanted to try Mashti Malones - oh well it gives us some reasons to come back (besides the great weather). Just an FYI - we had eaten a lot of Mexican in San Diego and wanted to eat other food. Oh yeah, we also went to In n Out in San Diego. Awesome - I wish we had one here in NY. I got a cheeseburger animal style with a chocloate/strawberry shake. The shake was perfect!
All in all we had a great time and plan on coming back. The people of LA are really nice and friendly and thanks to the LA Chowhound board for making sure we were well fed!
