La Paloma vs. Hollywood - My Two Cents

Hollywood hands down. Hollywood gelato, in my opinion, is a Toronto treasure.

I went to both this weekend. I went to the La Paloma in the new Vaughan Mills mall. I hope that the fact that I spent part of my weekend there will not affect my credibility too much.

La Paloma's stuff is good. They charge too much. Way too much. A medium cup costs more than $5. Who are they kidding?

LP's vanilla is a joke. It's yellow. It lacks black specks of real vanilla. It tastes lemony. Baskin Robbins' French vanilla is much better. LP's chocolate is not bad but Hollywood's "Valhrona" is better. The LP pistachio is not great; it has that too-bright-green appearance. At Hollywood, its colour resembles pistachios. At Hollywood, you can taste the pistachios.

Hollywood makes significantly superior gelato. It may be that LP is more like Italy. Certainly, their gelato looks more like the stuff in Europe. And, their flavours are more European, while at Hollywood, one can find Skor or Twix gelato. But, Hollywood also does the traditional stuff very nicely.

Hollywood's espresso and cappuccino are outstanding.
