I had dinner at La Folie for the first time last night and I was severely underwhelmed.
The foie was outstanding, large portion, nice presentation, excellent preparation. The halibut napolean, was more like a kabob from a backyard bbq. Not bad, but. Fish wasn't tender, zucchini chunks also too firm for my taste, and the lemom beurre blanc sauce was without flavor. Squab and quail roti was interesting and better than the halibut, but nothing on the plate really sang. I saw a bit of truffle, but didn't notice their flavor in the dish. Old perhaps? Better poultry dishes many many places. (The chicken at Bouchon OMG, but that's another post.) My business associate seemed to enjoy his lamb and beef. Portions, as have been reported are large.
Even the petite fours seemed off. The little gelee cube I usually adore wasn't much, and another seemed overcooked and leaden.
I didn't see the chef in the kitchen when I peeked in, so that could be an explanation. Prices are a few dollars north of Gary Danko.
