I had a wonderful meal last night at Kushiyu in Tarzana and just wanted to share. We always enjoy this place, but it was especially good yesterday.
Started with the house-smoked giant scallops. They came with a slightly sweet, slightly spicy sauce and were accompanied by a salad of thinly sliced onions, cucumbers and daikon. They were so good, we almost ordered a second plate of them, but decided to save room for the rest of our meal.
Next we had a round of kushiyaki, including a couple of the specials. The duck breast special kushiyaki was wonderful; skewers included chili peppers which didn't really help the duck, but were declicious on their own. The special chicken with shiso leaf was fantastic. I love the taste of shiso and it was yummy with the smoky chicken. The regular skewers we had - - chicken wings and squid - - were also good, as usual.
Onto the sushi. The special zuke salmon was wonderful - - a semi-cooked piece of marinated salmon with a few pieces of salmon roe on top. The special toro sushi was also great. Sweet shrimp were succulent and sweet with a nice firm texture. The spicy tuna on rice toast, one of the things that Kushiyu is known for, was also terrific. Ours was served fresh from the hands of the sushimaker and the toasts were still warm. It was so good that we ordered a second round for dessert.
All in all, a very satisfying meal! Can't wait to go back again soon.
