Kudos to Austin's crawfish nirvana at "The Boiling Pot"

Lunch there yesterday 4-28-2002. A very pleasant surprise. I've eaten 100's of pounds of crawfish in the Lafayette area in my time and these were *very* well done. Quality select crawfish. Cooked perfectly so the tail meat slips out and the flesh remains juicy. And the boil was superb. Well-seasoned and spicy. I like the fact that we were not asked for desired spicing level, for that means it is added after the boil. Here the spice was well judged: not too hot, not too milquetoasty. Only problem, not surprising, the price. $8.95 a pound, and my usual solo portion is 5 pounds. Hmmm. Decided to share 5 pounds & 1/2 dozen blue crab (also good!) as a compromise, for a tab of around $60 for two. The crawfish & other boil ingredients are "dumped" (literally!) onto butcher paper in the middle of the table. (A big advantage for the faster crawfish eater indeed :-) )
Service was good. The atmosphere laid back and pleasant. Only hideous thing was the white plastic chairs which are probably easy to hose down from crawfish boil juice at day's end, but devilishly uncomfortable. Overall I give it a big thumbs up. Went to Austin for meat, but an unexpected seafood surprise here, which was nice. It's downtown on 6th St. Only thing to remember (I didn't!) **never** wear a white shirt when eating boiled crawfish.
