It had been nearly a decade since I last dined at Enak, so I reckoned a return visit was in order this evening. What we had:
- Enak KL Appetiser Tasting Platter: "Cumi cumi goreng" (crisp, batter-fried squid rings), "Udang bakar" (grilled prawns) and "Pergedel" (Malay-style potato croquettes).
- "Gado-gado": poached potatoes, cabbage, long beans, tofu cubes and quail eggs and spiced peanut sauce.
- Beef Tasting Platter consisting of: "Daging Kurma", "Daging Hitam" and "Rendang Padang" (three types of slow-cooked beef curries, each with the different blend of spices and coconut creme).
- Crispy tofu deep-fried with egg-white, served with julienned cucumber with sweet dark soysauce.
- Biryani rice.
Overall, I found the meal disappointing. Of the appetiser platter, only the "pergedel' had any flavour, whilst the prawns were not fresh and bland-tasting.
The gado-gado was a pale shadow of the versions one gets outside in the street-side Malay stalls.
The trio of beef preparations were all over-cooked, resulting in overly-dry meats.
The crispy tofu was dressed in salty dark soy sauce instead of the sweet dark soy sauce - the chefs in the kitchen mixed up their sauces. Sorry to say, there wasn't a single dish to redeem the meal.
