What I liked about working in a certain new city (as opposed to being a tourist) - you get local colleagues who're willing to show you new eating experiences which you'd otherwise NEVER know about!
Case in point, KL's "Chilli Pan Mee". Essentially, you get a large bowl of pan mee (handmade wheat noodles - they are handcut & pretty uneven and crinkly), topped with a poached egg with runny centre, crisp-fried anchovies (ikan bilis), golden crisp shallots/garlic and minced pork which were cooked in spices which I could not identify. The famous "chilli paste" is served on the side, so you can add as much (or in my case - as little) as you want to the noodles, then toss the whole thing to dress up the noodles with the runny yolk. It's nice - the crispy bits juxtaposing with the soft, stretchy "pan mee". Every order of the "Chilli Pan Mee" came with a small bowl of soup flavored with "ikan bilis", with tiny, green potato leaves providing some color and texture. The fairly light-tasting soup was a nice contrast to the heavy, fiery noodle dish.
Also very nice is the pork meat balls soup, also cooked in the "ikan bilis" soup, with potato leaves & beancurd sheets. The meat balls were delicious.
Another popular side-order is the poached HK choy sum vegetables, topped with crispy garlic. Not to my taste - but it's personal as my colleagues all loved it.
Cost: RM5 per bowl of chilli pan mee. Pork ball soup comes in 2 sizes: RM5 or RM10 (for sharing between 2-3 persons).
