kimchee review (long)

it's been about one year since we moved to bay ridge and in this time kimchee restaurant on the corner of 93rd and 3rd ave has become one of our favorite places in the neighborhood. at the time it was the only korean restaurant in brooklyn. (since then i think a place opened in williamsburg?) although i do have a bad habit of ordering the same thing when i find something i love on a menu- for example at kimchee i can't get enough of the "goong-joong duk bokki" or rice cake w/ beef and veg- but i have ventured beyond this favorite and everything i have tried is consistently very good. another favorite i must mention is the "yuk gae jang" or beef in spicy red pepper broth with potato noodle. it really clears the sinuses. on top of the great food, i have to mention the level of customer service i have never experienced at any other restaurant. this is a family run restaurant and they are extremely attentive and helpful, which aside from the food here that we really enjoy, the extremely nice service we always receive is why this restaurant has quickly won our hearts. in january i ran into a misfortune of making a dinner reservation here for my family, hoping to share this great experience with them, and in the end after having pushed back the reservation time a few times i was forced to make an embarrassing last minute cancellation due to my family not showing up in time. the staff at kimchee were understanding each time i called to push back the reservation and i was so ashamed to make a last minute cancellation at any place, but especially a place we love and frequent. i immediately wrote a letter of apology to the staff at kimchee and i also posted on chowhound for advice because i wanted to return but was too embarrassed to show my face. the replies to my post encouraged me to return, which i eventually did with my tail between my legs and with a gift in hand i made a formal apology to the owner and his wife. so last night my bf and i took my sister to kimchee and the owner's son (who finally made the connection, as he put it that i was "the one") mentioned how customers had told him about my original post asking for advice and how he had replied to my post asking me to come back and that they missed my patronage. i never saw the reply and actually looked for it last night when i got home from dinner but i didn't see it (perhaps removed by the moderators?). i was touched that they could be so forgiving. and to show their appreciation for my patronage and also i think to let me know i was forgiven the owner's son ended up comping us the entire meal. it took us completely by surprise as this level of generousity and kindness is not a typical dining experience. so this past year i have been in this neighborhood and enjoying the great food and service at kimchee and always had intentions to write a review because it's a place any chowhound would love and appreciate, but last night when i left the restaurant i couldn't get over how happy i am to have found such a wonderful place where the owner truly cares about their customers. i will continue to give them my full support and hope that other chowhounders will also because it's places like these that make eating out so special.
