KC - Phillips Chop House

Let me first say that I'm not much of a steakhouse person. When in a city, I'm much more interested in almost every other type of food than steak. Don't eat it much. But, I just stayed at the Phillips Hotel in KC on biz and several people mentioned that I should give this place a try. I'm glad that I did.

The room is beautiful dark, paneled wood, most of which I'm told is original from when the restaurant was built in the 1930s. Warm lighting adds to the ambience. An unexpected pleasure was Joan Armatrading coming through the unobtrusive sound system for a short time. But, I was there for food. I began with the grilled romaine salad which had a light touch to the dressing allowing the grilled greens to really come out. A warm roll was served with three outstanding butters - chipotle, blue cheese and garlic. A second roll was necessary to fully enjoy these wonderfully infused butters.

My main course was the 12 oz KC bone-in strip, prepared perfectly to request for rare. Although many of the sides sounded nice, I opted for the brussels sprouts served with a light garlic sauce. More butter! A couple of glasses of a nice Argentine Malbec accompanied and dessert was liquid - a Canadian Eiswein.

The server was friendly without being smarmy and very knowledgeable about the history of the hotel as well as wine. All in all, a great experience but the only problem is that I'll be hungry again in 4 days.
