so we are also just back from a week in kauai. we stayed up north in hanalei, so we obviously spent more time eating in kapa'a and hanalei than down south.
it's hard to remember when i ate what, but in hanalei i can remember:
hanalei mixed plate (next to the ching young shopping center) really good pork and chicken with rice and mac salad. plus they were very nice and let us taste. i had a pork sandwich and felt that the mixed plate was way better. luckily, the mixed plate was big enough for two to share.
hanalei dolphin fish market- we got great fish for the grill and they also had sashimi which was so so good. they also had a good soft-shell crab roll, and the rolls they make are big.
zelo's beach house- the food was just ok. the portions were like really big. my husband had the ahi and i had the seafood brochette. the garlic mashed potatoes were very good though, but i was lukewarm about this place.
the service was very slow and easily distracted.
in kapa'a a pacific cafe- we got a dinner certificate as a wedding gift for this place. the food was very good. i had the dim sum sampler plate with baby lobster shumai, pork gyoza, and shrimp dumplings. it was much bigger than i expected and i needed my husband's help to finish it, but everything was delicious. i can't remember what my husband had for an app. i had the ono with rock shrimp risotto as a main and my husband had the mahi-mahi in buerre blanc with veggies. both of the mains were delicious- especially the buerre blanc. i expected the portions to be small (which was why i ordered the app in the first place) but they really were a good size, and i couldn't finish my main. hubsand had dessert- the toasted hawaiian. it was amazing. i don't know exactly what was in it, but something creamy and something coconutty and crushed macadamia nuts and it was delicious. it made me wish i had saved room for dessert. we were very happy with this choice.
restaurant kintaro- i had like the best sashimi plate here. the fish was like so tender and tasty and so so good. my husband had the sushi plate, which was also very good. but my yellowtail and ahi was like amazing. it was like butter.
hamura saimen- we went there on the way to the airport. we both ate for 10.50 and it was much better than any plane food i've had. we had the special, which has egg, wontons, pork, etc. the wontons were very good. we wanted to try more but it was crowded and we were pressed for time.
we had like a pretty good smoothie at banana joe's alone the hwy in anahole, but an even better one at the kauai products fair at the stall in the front. they were 2 for $5 and we had one with coconut milk, mango and banana and it was amazing.
my husband also had a burger from duane's ono char-burger (which he said was a pretty good burger) but the fries i had were very good. he had one from bubba's in kapa'a that he declared to be just ok.
we also had a plate lunch with short ribs at NO. 1 BBQ in lihu'e, which was like ridiculously cheap (3.50 for a plate with one scoop rice, one scoop mac and a good portion of meat). the regular size plate is pretty big there (2 scoops rice). my husband had some kind of combo plate and it was HUGE.
there was one place we didn't like and i wrote down the name but i might be off by a letter or two:
hanamaulu restaurant and tea house. it was on the kuhio hywy in lihu'e (i think). the fish was bad. the miso soup was bad. even the green tea ice cream had been scooped like 6 years earlier and left in a dish to collect freezer burn. it was gross. i was pretty amazed that we didn't get sick from what we did eat. and we went on like a friday night too! so i would avoid that. i'm sure we ate other things, but that's all i can remember right now. but we really had great food almost everywhere we went, and the island is pretty cool too...
