Just returned home to the U.K. from NY and was reflecting on a superb holiday in a great city. Cant wait to return.
The one disappointment was Katz Deli. Poor surly service, average food (we had the mixed meat with stale rye bread!) The cheesecake was not defrosted and dry and the coffee was served in plastic cups. The place was dirty and had a on its last legs feel. I dont understand all the hype about a decidedly below average café!!
Now Carnegies was a class apart. Great fresh food and wonderful service, in a deli, thats maintained its character without compromising standards. We had three deserts to die for, including a cheesecake, which put Katz to shame. Our coffee was topped up without asking (real big mugs!!) The cost was about the same, so for me Carnegies wins hands down.
Two other eateries worth a mention: Butterfly Grill at 189 Bleecker St. We had a lovely lunch of grilled shrimp with vermicelli. Full of subtle flavours and is worth a try.
Last but not least was Zeytinz at 24 W 40th St between 5th & 6th Ave overlooking Bryant Park. Outstanding choice of fresh Mediterranean buffet food and grill. The Lamb Kebab was one of the best Ive ever tasted. Get there before 12 and grab a seat upstairs overlooking the park. Just sublime.
