It was about 5:00 and we had finished buying a few books at Borders in the Freehold Mall. The mall was really hoppin and spots were hard to come by. As usual, the new boutique chain joints were already starting to fill up. We thought about just joining the milling sheep and queing up, but we found the strength to hike up to the car and head over to Tinton Falls for some real food. Thank goodness.
I've been meaning to try Kanji for a while now. Since they are a byo we stopped in next door at the liquor store and eschewed our usual wine in favor of a six pack of dark honey lager beer. Of course it was fairly quiet at 5:30 and we took full advantage and sat at a nice corner table and cracked open the first beer and ordered a Sunshine roll to start. It arrived soon and we both loved all that fresh salmony goodness and mopped up the excess spicy aoli with our rolls.
We followed that with an order of the special toro tartare, a chopped presentation with three sauces, and an X'mas roll with lobster and shrimp in a spicy eel sauce. Both were really good, all the ingredients were high quality and very fresh and the sauces were worth using a spoon for.
We were nearly full and very happy but decided to share an order of sirloin Yaki Udon just to try out how they fared with some hot food. The noodles were handmade and it was so tasty we ate more of them than we thought we would and only had a little to take home.
I am looking forward to going back.
