The joys and sorrows of jury duty

Blumie | Jan 24, 2014 06:57 AM

The sorrows are many: waiting outside in sub freezing temperatures because the court police guarding the entrance can't seem to screen more than one person every couple of minutes; sitting for an eternity in a depressing room under harsh flouresent lights; wifi that craps out after a couple of hours, never to be restored.

The joys: a roast pork banh mi, extra spicy, from Banh Mi Saigon. I was somewhat surprised to find the place nearly deserted at lunchtime on Wednesday; perhaps Tuesday's snow and Wednesday's cold kept people away. And I was shocked -- shocked I tell you -- that they now charge $4.50 for one of these puppies. Of course, I'd be willing to pay twice that price for such a beautiful and delicious sandwich. Only complaint: the vegetables were too cold, undoubtedly a requirement of the Health Department to win that coveted "A" grade in the window. Damn them.
