Anyone else in the Park Slope area as impressed as my wife and I are with Johnny Mack's? Whatever they're doing, they seem to be getting it right.
I remember when they opened several years ago. We happened to wander by on a VERY hot day, perhaps their first or second, and there were two guys outside grilling hot dogs and burgers. They offered us free samples and invited us into the bar for a cold beer, so we took them up on the offer. We thought they were really friendly then and wished them well.
At first, JM looked like nothing more than a friendly neighborhood beer joint that served up a reasonably good burger. Then they acquired the space on the corner and tried serving a more upscale cuisine, but it didn't work out.
But now they seem to have it right. Good, friendly place, lively crowd, food better than you would think. We had dinner there the other night, had calamari for an app, thought it was exceptionally good. Maureen had the pasta with garlic and oil and I had the pork chop, and we were really impressed.
I'm curious to hear what others think of Johnny Mack's, the neighborhood saloon that is growing up.
