Last night I was taken to what I think is New York's best restaurant, and while the non-dessert cuisine (we each had the "Summer Tasting Menu") was as good as ever (with some of the daring combinations brilliant and superb, and others "not quite superb but brilliantly daring, anyway"), the desserts were a genuine disappointment.
Each of our dessert selections consisted of four different items. I had the "Orchard" selection, and all four things were one notch above "bleh". My girlfriend had what I think was called the "Summer" selections, and with the exception of a very good chocolate mousse thing, her selections were "bleh," too.
On the bright side, the little tray of petit fours (little, probably because we didn't order much wine!) was superb-- among the best I've ever had. In fact, they were SO good, I wonder if they even came from the same person who designed the OTHER desserts.
Conclusion: JG, you need a new pastry chef!
