Japanese restaurant to accommodate sushi novices?

I'm meeting my parents in Pasadena for a weekend in a couple of weeks (we all live elsewhere), and I get to pick a dinner spot. For years I've been working on getting them to try sushi with no luck. In most other respects they are pretty adventurous with food, and they love any and all seafood otherwise, so I think it may be just a matter of getting them started gently. I would like to take them to a place where I can eat excellent sushi/sashimi and get them to try mine, while they can order non-sushi but interesting Japanese food if they feel the need to.

Although we will be based in Pasadena, we can transport elsewhere. Any price/formality level is okay, including high-end, since it is a birthday dinner for me, and my parents like decadent dinners. Also, either traditional or modernized is okay, as long as the place has really good sushi/sashimi. I am not an expert or a traditionalist. A place that is unusual or remarkable in some way would be ideal. I will appreciate any recommendations!
