Most barbecue fans, of which there seem to be many frequenting this board, are familiar with Myron Mixon of Jack's Old South because of his many triumphs at Memphis in May and many lesser barbecue contests.'
Jack's Old South was located in Vienna, Ga. for many years and a year or so ago turned up in Cordele, GA, just of I-75.
I ran into Myron at the Fine Swine barbecue cookoff at Marianna, FL, Saturday, and noticed that his smoker listed the team's home as Cordele, not Vienna, and asked if the Vienna store had closed.
His reply: "We closed Vienna when we opened Cordele, and now we've closed at Cordele, too. They raised our rent $1,000 a month, and we just couldn't make it at that. Now we're just doing catering, contests and selling our sauces."
I have to say I don't consider the closure a major blow. I don't go that way often, and though the 'cue was nothing special, just average South Georiga pork, nothing at all like Myron's competition 'cue. But I'm sure many in that area, and those traveling I-75, will miss it.
If you're ever at a contest where you have a chance to sample Myron's competition pork, grab some. It is fabulous.
