finally made it to the istrian sports club on astoria blvd in LIC after all these years of meaning to go. the food was surprisingly great, perfectly cooked grilled and fried calamari, the infamous croatian fuzi noodles in a veal sauce or tomato, osso buco that i hear was splendid, veal every which way and gnocchi in a simple picquante tomato sauce. they offer seafood as well but nobody in our group took that route.
wines from bastanich (istria being the homeland of lidia bastanich from felidias) and a lovely red called something like....dingich. we sat in the garden, played bocce on their bocce court between courses, enjoyed great service and finished dinner with palacinka's - beautifully delicate crepes filled with nutelle or apricot.
it was so much fun and quite good - the croatians in our party thought it was perfect. another good nyc diversion.....
