I must make a comment about about my first time experiences at most restaurants in Calgary.
We have some fabulous restaurants in this city, and the new ones opening keep things interesting. I wish though, that the owners and managers would be aware of the little details that appeal to, not just the tastebuds, but to the other senses. I want to be bowled over by my whole experience and usually leave underwhelmed.
One thing that i just get so discouraged about is the first look at a menu. Nine times out of ten the menus themselves are too dirty to touch. Not a very positive presentation of what is going to come out of the kitchen. It turns me off and that is one black mark against the coming experience. Back in the day it was the hostesses job to wipe the menus between seatings. Now , i think that the prevailing opinion is that its gross, and beneath them. Menus that are torn, and stained and grotty with who knows what do not give a great first impression. Things usually follow from that start and I would have to say that my overall reaction is "Bleh".
So, not to get to ranty, I will just put it out there to the people who's passion is feeding people, don't forget the little details. I will return over and over to some places because the passion extends outward from the kitchen to encompass the whole evening. The rest of you will not see me again. I could name names but the purpose is not to bash but to point out a little something that might make a difference.
