Il Gelatone

Here's my scoop (ouch) on the new Gelato place on 3rd Ave between 28th and 29th:

They currently have only 7 flavors and 2 are sorbets. They're waiting for new refrigerated casings to arrive and plan on offering 25 varieties. Owners have two other gelato stores, one in Florence and one 15km outside.

I had a wonderfully decadent coconut gelato last night made with fresh shaved coconut meat. I never select fruit flavors but this was something special. They also have a wildberry gelato which is a mixture of strawberries, rasberries and blackberries. Also available were Miu (sp?) which is like creme caramel, a stratiacella which is comparable to vanilla choc chip but much better, a dark choc type, a hazelnut with shaved nuts on top and a lemon sorbet. They have a descriptive menu with pictures of sundaes that looked fabulous. They offer crepes for lunch, fresh fruit juices and a few other items that are slipping my mind.

The Gelato is $5 for a medium and $6 for a large which seemed high to me but the quality warranted the price.
