i went to hope and anchor in red hook recently for brunch with 5 friends. we got some drinks and plenty of food. one of my friends had sent back his french toast b/c each piece was burned and they had tried to cover it up with a gross amount of powdered sugar. our waitress offered to comp the toast and bring out another order. but it was taking a while (15-20 min).
so finally my friend got up to find the waitress who came over and apologized b/c the kitchen forgot to remake the order, even mentioning that it takes just minutes for the dish. so she put the order back in - it came out a few minutes later.
when she brought the check, she said she had comped the toast and a couple drinks b/c she felt bad about our friend's inconvenience. after divying up the check 6 ways evenly, we put down 4 people cash and 2 on a card. It occurred to us that we had gotten a great deal and just felt lucky for it.
another friend had gone up to bring the check and money (b/c alas they forgot us in the back again) and came back rather confused. the manager negated the comped goods, except the toast and sent a new bill back, which was almost double the original bill. but he had already swiped/charged the card. he also refused to explain when asked what went wrong.
is this wrong? or is it ok? if the waitress presented us with a check, is the manager allowed to go back on it? especially after having charged the credit card?
We ended up paying the difference just to end the little fiasco and make sure the waitress didn't get stiffed.
