I normally wouldn't bother to post a negative review that might be old news to many Hounders, but the meal my wife and had at Hop Li last night was so bad it deserves to be noted. Why did I go? We were cruising around Chinatown and I remembered a post about a great place on the corner of Hill and Alpine (or so I remembered). The outside seemed welcoming. Inside, the place was clean, shiny and virtually empty. That should have warned me. Although the restaurant is billed as a "Seafood" place, there was little fresh seafood on the menu. Getting a little nervous, I decided to be cautious. We ordered hot and sour soup, a shrimp special and (don't laugh) orange chicken. The portions were very large, but the soup was bland and watery, the shrimp big but tasteless, and the chicken, not only was it not there under the thick batter, but literally inedible. The (apparent) owner offered some weak explanations when I sent it back, but he eventually took it away. Orange cardboard would have been preferable. We hastened through the rest of the meal and left, never to return again. My wife made me swear to check any Chowhound references before I allow my memory to be our guide. I hope I remember to do so.
