well, here we are... 6 ramen shops in 2.5 days. my final moments on my recent trip to the bay area were spent at himawari in san mateo - by then i was pretty much gratuitously full of noodles and still i felt i had to try it since my friend said it was an ok alternative to santa.
i went with that hyped 'okinawan sea salt' deluxe ramen and to be honest, it was fairly disappointing. the broth was too slight and the noodles simply awful. they weren't generic, but they lacked spring and were square-cut, which made a horrible texture in the mouth. they kind of remind me of ajisen's noodles (not sure about the new one up in the bay) but definitely the one in L.A.
the buta kakuni was ok, but it's much better at maruichi. i'd say the best thing that himawari has going for it is the ambiance, which is tricked out in that gentrified crate & barrel way most of the suburbs in the Silicon Valley seem to aspire to.
my melaniewong-inspired mini ramen rankings after this expedition?
